El-Buy: Kate Looks Great

I have princess envy.

I have switched my Middleton allegiance from Pips to Kate. Don't act surprised Pippa. You know what you did. LEGGINGS as PANTS?!

This lace back gown is just stunning and has turned the Dutchess of Cambridge into a bit of a sexy Sadie. Never one to directly copy, I found these amazing black lace cocktail dresses that might need to make their way into my closet. Behold the Mason by Michelle Mason lace back cocktail dress ($335) and the lace dolman dress ($380). They are the perfect marriage between conservative and sexpot.

El-Yes: What A Blessyn

I'm back...

I've been getting my baby shiz in check for the last eight weeks. But my mini fashion lover and I are finally starting to feel comfortable (and my body is starting to automatically wake up every few hours). So I am ready to blog again.

First up? A review of Shop 857's Anniversary and True Blessyn's Launch Party. My amazing students Emily and Michelle hopped on over to the party and interviewed the boutique owner Kelli Jones and the True Blessyn designer Shani Brown. Some event attendees included blogger ‘Ana Fonua and Fame Production Group founder Kristin D. Williams.  Thanks ladies for the recon mission!

Emily did a great write up of the event and also included some pictures. You can follow Emily on Twitter @emily_morano

Background – Shani Brown

Currently working full-time in Corporate America, this mother and designer has a lot on her hands. Originally from Jamaica, Shani has always dreamed of being a designer. She attended the International Academy of Design to pursue this dream.

Her typical day includes working on her Spring 2013 collection, meeting with her manufacturer, sourcing fabrics, and spending time with her daughter. When asked who her favorite designers were, Shani wasn’t quick to name off a celeb designer but instead likes supporting the local ones. “It isn’t all about the labels for me.” Having worked at Gap for four years, Shani still very much enjoys shopping there for their great basics. For Spring, Shani is loving the pastels and pleated maxi dresses!

Her advice to anyone who wants to be in fashion? You have to be business savvy! If you want to be a designer, know who you are designing for. Be persistent, stay true to yourself, and follow your dreams.

Spring 2012 Collection

Inspired by “Dream Chaser,” Shani’s Spring collection is made up of bamboo cotton, linen-like denim, and hand-painted designs done in collaboration with artist Sam Kirk. My personal favorite was a t-shirt with the words “Confidence Doesn’t Whisper” with a pair of pouty lips. Shani said this collection was all about chasing your dreams and goals and not letting others get you down in the process.

Fall 2012 Collection

Inspired by her ups and downs as a designer, Shani used red, black, and white in her Fall collection. A simple white blouse with a bow detail on the left shoulder, a layering tank with a hand-painted cross on the front, and a fun black and white patterned knee-length skirt were all part of the simplistically classic Fall collection.

El-Yes: Fondness for Ford; Passion for Paltrow

Oh Gwynie. Just when I think that I couldn't love you anymore, you show up looking perfect.

I am not sure this is good for my health or wallet. I am already an avid goop reader, lover of Tracy Anderson, and Spanish food convert. I refuse to name my future child Apple. Stop making me have a girl crush on you!!!

Obviously, Gwyneth Paltrow's Tom simple Tom Ford sheath/ cape was my favorite look from last night's Academy Awards. Call me old fashioned, but you just can't top pristine tailoring. She was a modern take on Sixties vintage. I might have to go reread A Thousand Days of Magic: Dressing Jackie Kennedy for the White House

Sorry J.Lo- nip slips and open shoulders do nothing for me.

Don't judge. I'm not the only one with a Gwyeth crush. Check out this pony post from Lock and Mane.

Since I have spent all of my hard earned cash on workout dvds, Coldplay downloads, and goop iPad apps, I'm looking to Rent the Runway for some help in channelling my inner Paltrow.

This Icelandic Dreams Dress from Halston Heritage provides the same lines and color (but with a more real-life friendly knee length hemline). It retails for $295 but you can rent it for $60! You can add a little sparkle with this Cara Accessories Dress Me Up Cuff Bracelet for $15.

El-Yes: Silver and Gold, Silver and Gold

New York fashion week is over, but my clothing lust has only begun.

While there are several future trends that I am eyeing, my favorite is the focus on metallics. What can I say? I love a little shine!

El-Yes: Back That Thing Up

Truth: Last night I watched porn... fashion porn.

I missed the Golden Globes red carpet- thanks to an everlasting baby prep class at the hospital. Don't be jealous. It involved a graphic birthing video. Once we got home, I melted into the sofa to watch the actual show. Is it wrong to say that I was way more excited about the clothes than the awards?

Frankly those dresses had me feeling tumultuous. They were polarizing. I either loved them or totally hated them. Side Note: Angelina please eat something. Even in unflattering shiny fabric, you still look way too mini.

While I saw loads of great trends (big hair, vibrant blues), my favorite trend was the sleek modern dress with an open back.  What a graceful and clean silhouette.

El-Buy: The Girl From Ipanema

In my past life, I was definitely from Brazil.

Reasons Why I Believe I Am A Rio Resident Reincarnated:

1. I melt whenever an Astrud Gilberto song pops up on Pandora.

2. I really like Caipirinhas.

3. I have developed a ridiculous obsession with Brazilian designer Oskar Metsavaht and his brand Osklen

Why is there no store in Chicago?

The Osklen store on Lincoln Road in Miami captured my attention for an afternoon. I probably would have purchased everything in the store/ moved in if I were not pregnant. Sadly, le bebe did not make it possible to try on all of the beautifully tailored knits.

Fear not! I did snag a great batwing navy and white dress from the sale rack- which will hopefully be worn post-baby.

El-Buy: Assouline Lust

There is nothing better than a good book.

I'm all for reading on the iPad/ Kindle/ Nook, but sometimes you just need to crack open the pages of a beautiful book. Life gets instantly better when you thumb through the thick pages, inhale the scent, and feel the weight of the publication in your hands.

I guess I have a literary addiction. Which accounts for the massive fashion library that has taken root on the shelves of our home office. I started collecting fashion books about ten years ago- they have spilled from our home into my office at work. I can usually be seen lugging hardcover fashion books all through campus,

So imagine my delight when I discovered this massive periodical! I MUST HAVE THIS BOOK. I think you should too. Here are the deets:

The Impossible Collection of Fashion By Valerie Steele, published by Assouline, $695

Now, who wants to buy this for me?

El-Yes: Jealous Much?

I'm not sure if Santa's Elves have a direct line to Chanel, but if so, I hope that I made the "Nice" list.

I am totally evergreen with envy over Miss El-Yes's French goods. I could stare at them for hours. The buttery leather! The quilting! The craftsmanship!

Admittedly, I am jealous.

I might need to stop by eDrop-Off and see if I can satisfy my lux lust.

El-Read: Follow The Dress Code

Je suis une frizzy haired disaster area - no thanks to this rain and wind. My umbrella turned inside out three times and my legs are FREEZING. Needless to say, commuter fashion photographs are not happening today. Unless, of course, I take pictures of the my damp and chilly self.

I need a hot chocolate and a hair and makeup team ASAP.

The only thing that might make this day more palatable is couture fashion. Tonight, at the Chicago History Museum, is Dress Code. This annual student fashion show features the best and the brightest of collegiate Chicago fashion (including one of my former students!). This year, the designers created garments based on the American couture designer Charles James.

James, an amazingly tortured and talented designer, is being highlighted with an exhibition of his work at the Chicago History Museum. His pieces are an illustration of perfect craftsmanship and a focus on tailoring and couture techniques (Have I mentioned that he is one of my favorites?).

So, brave the rain and head over to the Chicago History Museum tonight. Your $20 ticket will purchase a night of student fashion and a taste of the exquisite detailing that is Charles James.

El-No: Really Bad Highland Plaid

I had the luxury of wearing uniforms when I was a kid.

My elementary school world consisted of red plaid kilts and jumpers as well as some glorious peter pan collar white blouses. This made dressing for school very easy- I was thus able to focus all of my attention on important things like playground gossip.

As a result, I file plaid under the "love it" and "nostalgia" categories in my wardrobe.

So with tartan lust flowing through my veins, it hurts me to see this explosion of mismatched bad plaid. William Wallace would roll over in his grave if he saw this (he might also call for some sort of bloody Scottish attack. We've seen what Mel Gibson can do when he is mad. Yikes!).

What in the heck was Mr Braveheart thinking here? Why is he pairing two unrelated tartans together? He is either representing two ancient Gaelic clans or he just has bad taste.

Tartan is made with alternating stripes of threads woven at right angles to each other. This forms sections where different colors cross, which give the appearance of additional colors. The resulting pattern repeats and creates squares called setts.

Unless you are channelling McQueen's Highland Rape, I think it is best to pair plaid with a solid color. If you are going to attempt to mix your plaids, you should either stick with the the same plaid in different colors or the same color with a mix of plaids. Having one common element will keep you from looking like you went plaid mad.

El-Vacation: I'm Off Like A (Designer) Prom Dress

See ya sweaters!

We are squeezing out the last days of flip flop weather with a Southern vacation.

I'm looking forward to a relaxing long weekend, during which I'll be unapologetically reading my fall magazines (poolside). While I'm thumbing through new fashions, I thought you might want to see some wonderful vintage couture. A Louis Vuitton steamer trunk might even be more fab than a wam weather vacay.

Check out these pictures from the Leslie Hindman Vintage Couture Preview Event.

Picture 1: A collection of vintage Louis Vuitton and Gucci luggage.

Picture 2: A rack of vintage Emilio Pucci shift dresses. Each one was more stunning than the next.

Picture 3: Two vintage Gucci handbags. They sort of look like they want to come home with me. Don't they?

El-Yes: The Devil's In The Details

Don't be too jealous, but I played with couture this morning ... and I'm going back for Round Two in an hour.

I spent the day investigating the designer pieces that are being sold at auction on Tuesday, September 20th. Before each sale, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers opens up their space for preview days. Fashion lovers can look through racks of treasures and cases of fine jewlery and amazing accessories. The preview days go until Monday, September 19th.

I have oodles of drool worthy snaps- so you can look forward to those tomorrow and Friday. But I thought I would first post some of my favorite close up shots.

El-No: Gucci Gucci Louis Louis Fendi Fendi Prada

There are few times in life when the musical stylings of Kreayshawn and the White Girl Mob seem totally appropriate... almost a teaching tool. And by few, I mean this is the only time that I can think of a logical tie in.

According to this rapper, the “basic bitches wear that shit so I don’t even bother.” Very astute. I am assuming this means that Kreayshawn just read the Dana Thomas book Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster. According to Thomas (and Kreayshawn), luxury goods have become everyday objects that no longer symbolize achievement or financial success.

Someone please tell that to Mr. El-No. Maybe then he’ll take off the ridiculous tracksuit.

First of all, it is August, which seems like the wrong month to cover your body in head-to-toe velour. Perhaps he is training for the UFC and trying to make weight by sweating?  Maybe he is on some sort of detox plan that requires secreting out toxins? Couldn’t he at least save this look for cooler weather?

Secondly, you actually bought a Gucci tracksuit? Really?! For your sake, I hope this is fake. Mr El-No, luxury workout clothes don’t give you swag. You just look like a perspiring fashion wangsta.

El-No: W.W.McQ.D?

I am over-stimulated.

Seriously there is just way to much pop culture excitement happening for me. The Bachelorette! The Bulls! American Idol!

I can't handle it.

But there was one recent occurrence that put all of these other events to shame. Lingering in the McQueen exhibit at the Met was the cherry on top of a lovely New York weekend.

I actually visited the Met twice during my long weekend. On Friday, my trek proved fruitless when I was greeted with the prospect of waiting for two hours just to get inside of the exhibit. Saturday's early morning appearance was productive - I got in to the exhibit and saw this little momma outside.

Multi-hued crimson and butterflies had me wondering- What would McQueen do? How would Alexander fix this tawdry faux pas? Well I think that is obvious. He would hire Philip Treacy to design a hat.

Treacy's elegant butterfly edition for McQueen's Spring 2008 collection is the perfect fix. It is also just whimsical enough to make me forget about this horrible dreary weather.

Guest Post- El-Yes: Risk Is Reward

While I was kickin' it in Kiawah, dreams were being made in Chicago. I asked my fabulous student Jacki P to cover the finale of " So You Wanna Be A Designer." Check out her write up below:

Final contestants for the Kenmore live studio’s “So You Wanna Be A Designer” competition came head to head as fashion guru’s judged them and online voters sized up their last designs Thursday night. Past contestants pulled up in this fabulous ride to show their support for their dear friends. Palpable energy could be felt from across the street. The overriding sentiment in the place was hardly that of competition and rather one giant love fest!

El-yes I want those lace pants! These are my new found friends at the event who work for Mill Crest Vintage. Terri on the left was a judge for the competition and used to work for the host of the show, Debbie Jagel’s, handbag line. She’s dressed big names such as Martina McBride and Michael Buble. The best part about going to local fashion events is seeing the glamorous outfits attendees show up in!

Sports and fashion are like two peas in a pod – at least for previous NBA Bucks player and judge, Bobby Simmons, who started his own SuccezZ sneaker line. I already thought I was short before, but meeting with this giant gave new meaning to this self-concept of mine. Bobby believes success comes from within, which means it’s personally different for each individual. We’re all often our own worst critic and he emphasized the importance in loving what you make because that love will be reflected. He hopes to develop a couture big and tall line to come out this winter.

Making dreams a reality was the anthem of the evening. Judge Raul Penaranda, showed off his inspirational wristband with these words displayed on it. The show was turning into a bit of a motivational rally, which is refreshing considering we’re talking about an industry where having a thick skin is crucial and rejection can come hard. Achievement doesn’t come without taking risks.

Drum roll and the best fashion of the night goes to this black leather and sheer pant suit made for runway! I’m sensing a modern reworking of an Elizabethan era ruff and it’s working on this model. The complexities of the material and uniqueness in design come together in an impressive display. Designer, Tonya Pierce took great risk, having never worked with some of these materials and her boldness really proved her a cut above the rest.

Rival contestant Jessica Davis’s fun and vivid personality shone on her dress. Another El-Yes to that chic up do she’s rocking. While that high slit made me slightly nervous the draping across the shoulder and back on the dress were phenomenal. There’s no question both young ladies are going to take the fashion world by storm.

After eight intense weeks of challenges and critical judge panels, a tie breaker announced Tonya Pierce as the grand prize winner of $20,000 and an innovative Kenmore elite laundry pair. Does anyone else have a hard time buying those wedding dresses that were shown being thrown into the washer? Anyways, I was in love with the amazing outfit she was wearing all night. Jessica wins the sweetheart award in my book. I’m starting to believe the two talented competitors really did become great friends.

Talk about that low V neck and deep dip in the back! Florida native, Tonya’s edgy dress was completely stunning and fitting speaking of risk taking. I couldn’t keep my eyes off it. This young lady from IADT-Chicago is a rising star in the fashion world.

As much fun as it is to throw balloons and dance around with a giant whopping check, all final five contestants won in the end as Raul surprised them privately after the show with an invite to NY fashion week next September and the opportunity to go backstage with him. I’m beginning to think the road to success is more about the connections made than the money in reality. One thing is for sure: Dreams can become reality!

El-No: Viva la Canadienne (Or Not)

I have run out of cocktail dresses.

All of these Spring weddings, showers, and rehearsal dinners have left me in dire straits- this weekend I had to go back in the dress archives and pull out a LBD circa 2005. Yikes.

I popped into Macy’s last week to look through the cocktail dresses. But instead of an evening frock, I found this lovely Canadian tuxedo hiding in the Contemporary section. Is this what our Northern neighbors wear to weddings, eh?

Call in the Mounties! I need to make an arrest. Maybe I just don’t get it because I’m not Canadian? But I understand the appeal of poutine and I didn’t grow up with that.

I really don’t want to talk shiz aboot Matthew Williamson (yes, this is a designer denim disaster). Honestly, I think the reason this bothers me is because it is all one color and contains a vest. Ugly, eh?

Girlfriend likes a little contrast. Besides, denim came from French textile makers in the Nimes area (De Nime). I'll take my advice from the other side of the pond or from here in America (the land of Levi Strauss). I bet the ladies at Cityblue Denim could find me a more suitable denim look.

El-Yes: Her Royal Hotness

I would like to look like Pippa Middleton when I grow up. I don't know what she's doing to look that hot, but someone needs to bottle it and sell it.

Seriously. I'll buy it.

Since I will have to spend all of my money on pilates and magical Pippa pills, I won't be able to shop for royal fashions. That's where Rent The Runway comes in handy. Instead of purchasing a regal wardrobe, I can rent it.

This week, I plan to reenact the Royal Wedding. Won't I make a stellar head bridesmaid?

I think that I'll wear either the Narciso Rodriguez cream colored Sand Ripples Dress (retails for $2,095 but rents for $250) or the Narciso Rodriguez Roaring Twenties Dress (retails for $2,300 but rents for $300). I will get my bling on while sporting these gorgeous Miriam Haskell Power of Pearl Earrings (they retail for $180 but rent for $25).

Encore! Encore!

For my next Middleton impression, I will slip into this lovely Emerald City Gown from Temperley London (retails for $1,995 but rents for $250). The paparazzi and the other commoners will obviously stalk me. I will need to keep a pen on hand for autographs. This Judith Leiber Gold Fortune Cookie Clutch (retails for $1,995 but rents for $175) should fit all of my gear.

El-Read: Unraveled

Good news! Deconstruction does not involve traffic cones or being late to work.

This postmodern* fashion movement evolved from French philosopher Jacques Derrida.** Derrida hoped to look at language and writing with new eyes. He wanted to investigate the internal contradictions and undermine logic within text.

This concept has a place in fashion. At its most simple, this could mean that a garment has purposefully unfinished edges (challenging the idea that a garment must be finished to be complete). Thanks to the Vivienne Westwood and other Punk designers, this idea seems to be part of the street style vernacular.

In my fabulous SAIC fashion class with Cheryl Pope, we explored this concept by playing with men’s suiting pieces. Suffice to say, I am now besties with my seam ripper. These are some of these pieces from our class show this weekend.

Get this look without the long philosophical rant or owning a sewing machine by checking out Maison Martin Margiela.

* Yes, this morning I am wearing my professor pants. I have decided to use big words that pop up during critiques when students are trying to sound sassy.

** Takes sip of coffee and cranks up iTunes playlist to gear up for big philosophy discussion.

El-Yes: Visions of Vintage

I’ve been told that every girl needs a little black dress.

Screw that.

Every girl needs a Nolan Miller orange silk chiffon and sequin flame evening gown. Every girl… except Gladys Knight. The Empress of Soul just auctioned off the fiery frock that she wore during a performance of “Love on The Rocks” with Tom Jones. I have no idea why. This sequined dress is exactly what my wardrobe is missing.

Yesterday I visited Leslie Hindman Auctioneers as they prepared for the Spring Vintage Couture Auction. The racks were packed with amazing vintage finds and I was able to get up close and personal with a variety of pieces. The textures and colors were breathtaking.

While I loved all of the gorgeous garments, I fell in lust with a YSL faux zebra purse. I want it. I need this somewhat politically incorrect bag. Sadly, I will not be able to make it over to today’s noon auction.

I will have to settle for one of these fabulous DVF zebra suede clutches. Available in the large size ($325) or small size ($295), these bags are the perfect evening accessory.

El-Yes: Isn’t It Romantic?

I’m going out on a limb here.

I like big sleeves and I cannot lie. You other girlies can’t deny.

I saw this little lady at the Alexis Bittar store opening on Friday. Much to the surprise of my party-going friends, I thought she looked fantastic. They did not. But I think that she was a big puffy pink example of personal style at it’s best.

I wouldn’t wear these bulbous puffers but I thought that Miss El-Yes rocked it. She paired this scene-stealing top with simple slacks, blunt hair, and very little makeup. Her minimal approach is the only thing that saved her from tipping into 80’s prom territory.

Big ‘ole inflated sleeves made their first appearance in the Romantic Period during the Victorian Era. They were the signature feature of the time period and came in a variety of shapes and sizes.

My personal favorite is the Idiot Sleeve, which was a swollen sleeve that puffed from the shoulder all the way to the wrist (talk about a perfect name). Miss El-Yes is showcasing a Gigot or Leg-Of-Mutton Sleeve (aptly named for the hindquarters of a sheep).

This look isn’t for the faint of heart.

Incorporate a little puff into your stuff with this Ralph Lauren puff sleeve shirt. It is classic piece but will allow you to add a touch drama to your wardrobe.
